The Amazon is often called the lungs of our planet because of its vital role in producing oxygen and supporting biodiversity. As you step into this realm, you can’t help but feel an adventure brewing. Join us on a thrilling journey through the lungs of the Amazon as we recount a road trip that begins in Cusco, Peru, and travels deep into the heart of the Amazon basin.

Setting Off from Cusco

Everything started in Cusco, Peru. After visiting Machu Picchu, we found ourselves at the only campground in the area. Around us were travelers from various places, each with a unique vehicle adventure to share. We were faced with a choice: head down towards Patagonia or cut inland towards Brazil, crossing the Amazon. Although the Amazon appeared intimidating, our curiosity pushed us to embrace the challenge.

Before embarking on our journey, we had a small setback; our truck was broken into, and our camera gear was stolen. This event didn’t deter us, as we learned of the severe flooding impacting local communities and decided to move forward. We drove over the Andes mountains, culminating at elevations of 15,500 feet. The breathtaking views were the perfect reminder of why we love this adventure.

Crossing Into the Amazon

After descending towards Puerto Leguía, we entered the Peruvian state of Madre de Dios. It’s an area filled with beauty yet marred by dark history. Due to illegal logging practices, much of this land has faced significant exploitation. The original inhabitants, indigenous groups, have bravely fought against this devastation. Arriving in Puerto Maldonado, we found ourselves surrounded by lush jungle and plenty of lodges eager to offer us a glimpse of Amazonian life.

Transitioning north towards Inapari, we encountered the only land border crossing to Brazil. Despite the lingering concerns about flooding, we were relieved to see that conditions had improved.

Into Brazil

Upon entering Brazil, we were greeted with bureaucratic formalities that proved easy to clear. Soon, we were navigating pothole-ridden roads as we ventured deeper into the Amazon. Along the way, we relied on old posts from fellow travelers to find camping spots. However, finding a safe place proved challenging. Thankfully, we discovered a lovely family-run resort outside of Brasileia, where we could set up camp.

After stocking up on supplies, our journey continued toward Porto Velho. The roads, although winding and rugged, were manageable thanks to diligent upkeep from Brazilian authorities.

The Enigmas of BR-319

Now entering the infamous BR-319, an unpaved highway, we prepared ourselves for what could be an arduous drive. This road is significant as it symbolizes both connectivity and conflict – a dual edge sword for the Amazon. The impacts of deforestation loom large, but the sheer beauty of the surroundings inspired us on our journey.

While driving through the remote wilderness, we camped near beautiful waterfalls and wildlife. Nature hinted at its secrets, reminding us of why the lungs of the Amazon deserve our attention and protection.

Surprises and Nature’s Marvels

From the hidden treasures like the pink river dolphins to rare fruits like atemoya, the Amazon served up surprises at every turn. We found ourselves in awe of the diverse trails, learning more about the indigenous culture, with the local guide, who taught us about the Amazon’s botanical wonders.

Our time in the deep jungle was filled with moments of raw connection with nature—a reminder that we are guests in this remarkable ecosystem.

The Challenges that Shape Us

Despite the excitement, our journey was not without challenges. We faced unforeseen adversity with our vehicle as we navigated the sometimes treacherous terrain. Kind-hearted locals extended their support when needed, showcasing the strength of community in this remote region.

However, amidst the majestic views and thrilling adventures, a tragic turn awaited us. Our beloved dog, Cuenca, went missing, sparking a frantic search that would last days. The power of hope filled our hearts, leading us into unknown roads as we sought her return, but as the days rolled on, despair replaced our optimism.

This experience encapsulated the beauty, heartache, and resilience one finds in nature. We learned not just about the Amazon rainforest but about the intricate balance between humanity and the environment.

In reflections of our journey, we realized that exploring these vital habitats comes with the responsibility to protect them. Even in the face of tragedy, we hold onto the belief that our future journeys will continue to shed light on the wonders of the world.
